Research has proven that eating antioxidant-rich, healthy foods will lead to a smoother and improved complexion. I make a conscious effort to feed my skin with fresh produce, fruit, lean meats and whole grains as much as possible. Below is a list of foods from iVillage.com that are believed to be fabulous, (as well as a few that are not so fabulous) for both you and your skin!
Water – Water helps to flush out toxins in the body and helps everything run smoothly including digestion, thought processes and alertness. It makes your skin glow, look fresh and appear well-rested. Aim for about 8-10 glasses a day.
Omega 3-Rich Foods – Consuming foods like salmon, flax seeds, walnuts and canola oil will help your skin remain plump by holding water in skin cells. Omega 3’s also act as inflammatory agents, which improves blood flow, making skin glow.
Selenium-Rich Foods – Studies have shown that this mineral prevents oxidative damage to the skin cells, which can age and roughen them. Whole-wheat bread and cereal, turkey tuna and brazil nuts are high in selenium, and should be eaten regularly.
Green Tea – This drink is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and may help protect skin cells, making the skin look fresher and well-rested.
Vitamin A Rich Foods: This vitamin is vital to repairing skin cells. When levels are low, the skin becomes dry and flaky. Foods such as carrots, broccoli and sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A.
What To Avoid:
Alcohol: Alcohol dries out the skin, leaving it dry and irritated. Additionally, sugary drinks can sometimes trigger breakouts
Caffeine: Drinks such as sodas and coffee completely suck moisture out of skin. “Caffeine makes skin appear dry and tired because it acts as a diuretic and dries out the skin,” says NYC dermatologist, Dr. Michele Green. If you must have your caffeine-fix, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to counteract the dehydrating effects of the caffeine!
Baked Goods, Pasta, White Bread: Too many sugary, refined carbs reduces the elasticity of collagen in the skin, which can cause wrinkles. Opt for whole grains, instead!
Fried Foods: Fried foods contain fractioned oils that are very bad for your skin, according to iVillage.com. Consuming large amounts of fried foods can lead to premature aging, and makes it difficult for nutrients to enter cell membranes. This can lead to oily/dry skin, clogged pores or poor circulation. So, steer clear of the drive-through and look for a healthy alternative!
